UPSC Shortlists Over 1,000 Aspirants for Indian Forest Service Main Examination
Candidates who cleared the Civil Services Preliminary Examination screening stage must now complete online formalities to secure admission to the Indian Forest Service (Main) Examination.
New Delhi, June 16: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the list of candidates shortlisted for the Indian Forest Service (Main) Examination 2026. A total of 1,046 aspirants have qualified for the next stage of the recruitment process after clearing the screening test conducted through the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination held on May 24, 2026.
The shortlisted candidates will now move forward in the selection process for recruitment to the prestigious Indian Forest Service (IFS), one of the country’s key All India Services responsible for environmental conservation, forest management, and wildlife protection.
Selection Based on Preliminary Examination
According to the commission, the candidates have been selected on the basis of their performance in the Civil Services Preliminary Examination, which serves as the screening test for admission to the Indian Forest Service Main Examination.
UPSC stated that 1,046 candidates have qualified against the 80 vacancies notified for the Indian Forest Service Examination 2026. The figures indicate a highly competitive selection process, with the number of qualified candidates significantly exceeding the available positions.
The announcement marks an important milestone for aspirants who have been preparing extensively for one of India’s most demanding competitive examinations.
Comparison With Previous Recruitment Cycle
The number of candidates shortlisted this year is notably lower than the previous recruitment cycle. In 2025, the commission had shortlisted 2,116 candidates against 150 vacancies notified for the Indian Forest Service.
The reduction in both vacancies and shortlisted candidates reflects changing recruitment requirements and the commission’s screening standards for the current examination cycle.
Experts believe that fluctuations in vacancy numbers are common and depend on cadre requirements, retirements, and manpower planning undertaken by the concerned authorities.
Online Application Process Mandatory
UPSC has informed qualified candidates that they will soon be provided an online window to submit and verify important details required for admission to the Main Examination.
Candidates must log in to the official UPSC portal and complete all required formalities within the prescribed period. Failure to complete the process may result in disqualification from appearing in the examination.
The commission emphasized that merely qualifying in the preliminary stage does not automatically grant admission to the Main Examination. Submission of the application form and verification of details remain compulsory requirements.
Examination Fee and Exemptions
As part of the admission process, candidates will be required to pay an examination fee of Rs 200. However, certain categories have been exempted from payment.
Female candidates, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), Scheduled Caste (SC), and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates will not be required to pay the examination fee.
The fee exemption is in line with UPSC norms aimed at promoting inclusivity and equal access to competitive examinations.
Additional Information Required
Apart from fee submission, candidates will be asked to provide several important details related to examination arrangements.
These include information regarding the requirement of a scribe, assistive devices, and question papers in large-font format for eligible candidates. Aspirants will also be required to indicate their cadre preferences as part of the application process.
The commission has clarified that the schedule for opening the online submission window will be announced separately through its official website.
Admit Card Linked to Application Submission
UPSC has made it clear that all shortlisted candidates must submit their application forms through the designated online platform to receive their e-admit cards.
Candidates who fail to complete the submission process will not be issued admit cards and, consequently, will not be permitted to appear in the Indian Forest Service Main Examination.
Even candidates who had previously uploaded their documents and do not wish to make any modifications are required to log in, verify their information, and complete the final submission process.
The commission said this step is necessary to ensure accurate records and facilitate the generation of examination documents.
Result of One Candidate Withheld
The commission also disclosed that the result of one candidate has been withheld due to an ongoing legal matter.
According to the official statement, the candidature of roll number 6300119 remains subject to the outcome of a court case currently under consideration.
No additional details regarding the case have been made public.
Answer Keys and Cut-Off Marks Later
Candidates eager to know the cut-off marks and answer keys for the screening examination will have to wait until the completion of the recruitment process.
UPSC stated that the marks, cut-off scores, and answer keys related to the Civil Services Preliminary Examination used for screening purposes will be published only after the final results of the Indian Forest Service Examination 2026 are declared.
This practice is consistent with the commission’s long-standing policy regarding competitive examinations.
Role of the Indian Forest Service
The Indian Forest Service is among India’s most prestigious civil services and plays a critical role in environmental governance. Officers are responsible for implementing policies related to forests, wildlife conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable management of natural resources.
The service contributes significantly to ecological preservation, climate resilience, and environmental administration across the country.
Every year, thousands of aspirants compete for a limited number of positions, making the examination one of the toughest recruitment processes in the public sector.
Assistance for Candidates
UPSC has advised candidates to regularly monitor its official website for updates regarding the application process, examination schedule, and other important notifications.
For queries related to the result or admission process, aspirants may contact the commission’s facilitation centre through the designated helpline numbers during working hours.
With the declaration of the shortlist, the focus now shifts to the Main Examination stage, where candidates will face a more comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate their knowledge, analytical abilities, and suitability for a career in the Indian Forest Service.
The Indian Forest Service Main Examination 2026 is expected to witness intense competition as the 1,046 shortlisted candidates compete for just 80 coveted positions in one of India’s most respected public services.
