US Ambassador Praises Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis
Mumbai project aims to expand advanced healthcare, medical tourism and India-US cooperation while attracting investment in technology and innovation
MUMBAI, Aug 19: US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor praised Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his energetic leadership as the state government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with US based Cleveland Clinic to develop a major ‘Medicity’ project in Mumbai.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Fadnavis and Gor and is aimed at creating an international-standard healthcare hub in Maharashtra. The proposed facility is expected to strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure and boost its position as a destination for medical tourism.
Speaking at the event, Gor highlighted Mumbai’s global prominence and praised Fadnavis’ approach to governance and development.
“Today, Maharashtra is on the world map due to two major things. The first thing is Mumbai and the second thing is your state’s unique and energetic Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis,” the US envoy said.
Gor also referred to his interactions with leaders across the world while describing Fadnavis as an energetic, dynamic and passionate leader.
The Maharashtra Medicity project is planned across 165 acres, with Cleveland Clinic serving as an anchor partner. The initiative is expected to bring advanced medical services to Mumbai while supporting healthcare investment, research and medical tourism.
Fadnavis said Maharashtra’s pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors offer significant opportunities for international collaboration. He underlined the state’s ambition to develop world-class medical facilities and attract global partners.
The chief minister also called for India-US ties to progress beyond strategic cooperation towards stronger economic integration, with Maharashtra seeking a larger role in investment, technology and manufacturing partnerships.
“The next chapter of the India-US partnership must move from strategic convergence to economic execution,” Fadnavis said.
He identified technology as a key area for future cooperation and said Maharashtra was looking to attract greater investment in digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence and innovation-led industries.
According to Fadnavis, changes in global supply chains have created an opportunity for India, and particularly Maharashtra, to emerge as a trusted base for high-tech manufacturing, global capability centres and data infrastructure.
He said the future of bilateral ties would increasingly focus on co-investment, co-innovation and co-development. The chief minister also pointed to the need for resilient and dependable supply chains amid disruptions in global markets.
Fadnavis invited international investors to consider Maharashtra as a global business platform, citing its skilled workforce, connectivity and established industrial infrastructure.
He stressed that new investments should not only strengthen economic cooperation but also generate employment and create greater opportunities for the state’s young population.
The discussions held during the event also covered opportunities to expand cooperation between Maharashtra and the United States in healthcare, technology and other sectors.
The Medicity initiative is expected to serve as a significant addition to Mumbai’s healthcare ecosystem while creating avenues for international medical partnerships and investment.
