US-Iran Talks Collapse After 21-Hour Marathon, No Agreement Reached: VP Vance

Diplomatic breakthrough remains elusive as both sides hold firm on nuclear commitments and sanctions concerns

Islamabad, Apr 12: High stakes negotiations between the United States and Iran concluded without a breakthrough after more than 21 hours of continuous discussions in Islamabad, marking a rare but inconclusive diplomatic engagement between the two nations.

Addressing the media, JD Vance described the talks as “substantive” but acknowledged that both sides failed to bridge critical differences. He noted that while discussions were productive in parts, no consensus could be reached on key issues.

“We have been engaged for over 21 hours with serious deliberations. That’s the positive aspect. However, we have not been able to secure an agreement,” Vance said, emphasizing that Washington’s primary demand remains a firm assurance that Tehran will not pursue nuclear weapons capabilities.

The US reiterated its position on non-proliferation, stressing the need for a clear and verifiable commitment from Iran. According to Vance, the Iranian delegation declined to accept the terms presented during the negotiations. He refrained from disclosing specific sticking points, citing the sensitivity of ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The talks, facilitated by Pakistan, marked the first engagement at this level since the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Vance praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir for their role in hosting and supporting the dialogue, calling their efforts “exceptional.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed that extensive exchanges took place, covering a wide range of issues including nuclear policy, sanctions relief, regional conflict, and strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz.

Baqaei stated that progress depends on mutual respect and genuine intent, urging the opposing side to avoid “unreasonable demands” and recognise Iran’s rights. He also appreciated Pakistan’s role in facilitating the dialogue and fostering a constructive environment.

Despite the failure to reach an agreement, both sides indicated that diplomatic channels remain open, leaving room for potential future engagement.
