“US Labels Muslim Brotherhood Branches as Terrorist Organisations Over Alleged Hamas Links”
Washington Imposes Sanctions on Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon Branches Citing Links to Terrorism and Hamas
US, Jan 14 : The United States has officially designated branches of the Muslim Brotherhood operating in Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan as “terrorist organisations,” imposing financial and travel sanctions against the group. The move is part of efforts to cut off funding and support for organisations accused of engaging in terrorist activities.
According to US authorities, the Muslim Brotherhood has a long history of involvement in terror-related acts. The Treasury Department, in a post on X, said:
“The Treasury Department is taking action pursuant to President Trump’s leadership by designating Muslim Brotherhood Branches as Terrorist Organizations. This Administration will deploy the full scope of its authorities to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat terrorist networks wherever they operate to keep Americans safe.”
The US alleges that the Brotherhood branches maintain links with the Palestinian group Hamas, engaging in activities against Israeli interests and encouraging attacks on American partners in the region.
“Chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood purport to be legitimate civic organisations while, behind the scenes, they explicitly and enthusiastically support terrorist groups like Hamas,” the Treasury Department stated.
The Egyptian and Jordanian branches were specifically cited for coordinating with Hamas, whose large-scale October 7, 2023, attack on Israel triggered a major Israeli military offensive in Gaza.
The designation follows an executive order signed by President Trump in November 2025, aimed at blacklisting terror-linked organisations.
Egypt welcomed the US action, calling it a “crucial step” that highlights the group’s extremist ideology and its threat to regional and international security. Other Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, have long advocated for banning the Muslim Brotherhood due to its goal of establishing a unified Islamic caliphate.
