WASHINGTON, June 17: The United States has defended its decision requiring Iran’s national football team to leave the country shortly after its opening FIFA World Cup match, rejecting complaints from Iranian officials who argued that the arrangement disrupted player recovery and tournament preparations.

The issue emerged after Iran’s dramatic 2-2 draw against New Zealand in its first World Cup fixture. Following the match, Iranian coach Amir Ghalenoei expressed frustration over what he described as an unexpected order for the squad to immediately return to its training base in Mexico rather than remain overnight in California.

However, American officials maintain that the travel schedule had been clearly communicated to the Iranian delegation well before the tournament began.

Andrew Giuliani, Executive Director of the White House FIFA Task Force, stated that the procedures governing Iran’s participation in matches hosted in the United States were established in advance and shared with team representatives.

According to Giuliani, Iran’s players and coaching staff were informed that they would be permitted to enter the United States one day before each scheduled match and would be expected to depart on the same day after the game concluded.

Further complications emerged when Iranian winger Mehdi Torabi reportedly encountered visa-related difficulties after the team’s opening fixture.
