US Source Says Iran Anticipated Team’s Departure Following World Cup Match
Washington says travel arrangements were communicated in advance as Iran raises concerns over player recovery, visa issues, and tournament logistics.
WASHINGTON, June 17: The United States has defended its decision requiring Iran’s national football team to leave the country shortly after its opening FIFA World Cup match, rejecting complaints from Iranian officials who argued that the arrangement disrupted player recovery and tournament preparations.
The issue emerged after Iran’s dramatic 2-2 draw against New Zealand in its first World Cup fixture. Following the match, Iranian coach Amir Ghalenoei expressed frustration over what he described as an unexpected order for the squad to immediately return to its training base in Mexico rather than remain overnight in California.
However, American officials maintain that the travel schedule had been clearly communicated to the Iranian delegation well before the tournament began.
Andrew Giuliani, Executive Director of the White House FIFA Task Force, stated that the procedures governing Iran’s participation in matches hosted in the United States were established in advance and shared with team representatives.
According to Giuliani, Iran’s players and coaching staff were informed that they would be permitted to enter the United States one day before each scheduled match and would be expected to depart on the same day after the game concluded.
“We were clear this was the process,” Giuliani said while responding to concerns raised by Iranian officials.
Recovery Concerns Raised by Iranian Camp
The Iranian coaching staff argued that the arrangement affected the team’s ability to follow standard post-match recovery protocols.
Coach Ghalenoei noted that players had anticipated spending the night near the match venue, allowing medical staff and trainers sufficient time to oversee recovery sessions before travel.
Sports teams participating in major international tournaments typically remain near match venues for at least several hours or overnight after games to facilitate treatment, rest, and tactical evaluations.
Iranian officials contend that the immediate departure requirement created unnecessary logistical challenges for players competing at the highest level of international football.
The concerns were amplified by the extensive travel demands already facing the team during the competition.
Visa Complications Add to Challenges
Further complications emerged when Iranian winger Mehdi Torabi reportedly encountered visa-related difficulties after the team’s opening fixture.
Team representatives disclosed that Torabi’s entry visa expired following the first match, forcing officials to begin efforts to secure the necessary documentation for his participation in future games scheduled in the United States.
While American authorities confirmed that all players and coaching personnel received visas enabling them to participate in tournament matches, some members of Iran’s broader support staff reportedly did not receive approval to enter the country.
The visa issue has added another layer of uncertainty to Iran’s World Cup campaign, which has already been affected by broader geopolitical tensions.
US Explains Entry Restrictions
When questioned about the denial of entry for certain Iranian support personnel, Giuliani declined to discuss individual cases but pointed to existing U.S. national security policies.
He referenced earlier statements from Secretary of State Marco Rubio concerning individuals allegedly linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
American authorities have maintained that individuals with direct ties to organizations subject to U.S. sanctions or security restrictions would not be granted entry, even during an international sporting event such as the FIFA World Cup.
The policy reflects Washington’s broader approach toward Iran amid ongoing diplomatic and security disputes between the two countries.
Geopolitical Tensions Shadow Tournament
Iran’s participation in the World Cup has unfolded against the backdrop of heightened tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The Iranian football federation had previously requested that its group stage matches be moved outside the United States, citing security and political concerns. However, FIFA declined the request and retained the original tournament schedule.
Despite the challenges, Iran ultimately committed to participating in the competition and traveling between host venues according to tournament requirements.
The situation has drawn significant international attention because the World Cup is being staged across multiple host nations, requiring extensive cross-border movement for several participating teams.
Players Describe Lengthy Travel Experience
Iran captain Mehdi Taremi also highlighted difficulties encountered during the team’s journey from its Mexican training base to the United States before the opening match.
According to Taremi, a trip that would normally require a relatively short travel time turned into a lengthy process involving extensive security screenings and administrative checks.
The captain stated that the squad spent approximately five hours completing travel formalities before arriving in the Los Angeles area.
The experience, he suggested, placed additional strain on players already preparing for one of the most important matches of their World Cup campaign.
Taremi called on FIFA to provide greater support to teams facing extraordinary logistical and administrative challenges during the tournament.
FIFA Under Pressure
The controversy has reignited discussion about how international sporting bodies should manage participation by teams from countries involved in ongoing political disputes.
While FIFA has consistently emphasized that football should remain separate from politics, the governing body continues to face scrutiny over balancing tournament logistics, national security requirements, and competitive fairness.
For Iran, the immediate focus remains on preparing for upcoming matches while navigating travel restrictions, visa arrangements, and complex scheduling requirements.
As the World Cup progresses, tournament organizers will likely continue monitoring the situation closely to ensure that sporting competition remains the central focus despite the diplomatic challenges surrounding one of the event’s most closely watched teams.
