New Delhi, Dec 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid rich tributes to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his 101st birth anniversary, saying that his personality, work and leadership continue to serve as a guiding light for the nation’s all round development.
Vajpayee, who served as India’s prime minister three times between 1996 and 2004, dedicated his entire life to good governance and nation-building, Modi said.
“My respectful tributes to former prime minister, Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji, who lives in the hearts of every Indian, on his birth anniversary,” the Prime Minister wrote on X in Hindi.
Recalling Vajpayee’s multifaceted personality, Modi said the former prime minister would always be remembered as a brilliant orator and a spirited poet. “His personality, work and leadership will continue to inspire the country’s journey towards holistic development,” he said.
Modi described Vajpayee’s birth anniversary as an occasion to draw inspiration from his life and ideals. He said Vajpayee’s conduct, grace, ideological firmness and unwavering commitment to keeping national interest above all else set a benchmark for Indian politics.
“Through his life, he proved that greatness is not defined by position, but by conduct. It is conduct alone that guides society,” Modi said.
Born in Gwalior on December 25, 1924, Vajpayee passed away in New Delhi on August 16, 2018. The government observes his birth anniversary as Good Governance Day.
