Vijay Faces Setbacks: ‘Theri’ Re-Release Delayed, ‘Jana Nayagan’ Certification Stalled

Fans’ excitement dampened as scheduling conflicts delay ‘Theri’ re-release and CBFC objections stall ‘Jana Nayagan’ ahead of its planned debut.

Thalapathy,Jan 14 :  Vijay’s fans were gearing up for a nostalgic cinematic treat with the re-release of the blockbuster ‘Theri’, but the plans have now been officially postponed. Producer Kalaippuli S Thanu, on behalf of V Creations, announced on X that the decision comes after multiple producers requested a reshuffle of release dates to avoid clashes in packed theatres. With several films vying for screens, the re-release team opted for a delay, prioritising fair play for all releases.

Meanwhile, Vijay’s upcoming film ‘Jana Nayagan’ has hit a more complicated roadblock. Originally slated for a January 9 release, the film ran into issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which flagged certain scenes as potentially offensive to religious sentiments. Makers KVN Productions LLP initially secured a favorable U/A 16+ certificate from a single-judge bench of the Madras High Court. However, the CBFC challenged the order, and a division bench issued a stay on January 9, putting the film in legal limbo.

Producers have now escalated the matter to the Supreme Court, seeking an ex parte interim stay to override the division bench order, while the CBFC has filed a caveat insisting no action be taken without hearing its side. Expert opinions, particularly concerning depictions of the armed forces, are also being considered.

For now, ‘Theri’ fans must wait longer for their throwback treat, and ‘Jana Nayagan’ remains in judicial uncertainty, leaving Vijay’s film journey in a double bind of delays and certification battles.
