Vivek Ramaswamy Faces Tight Ohio Race Against Democrat Amy Acton

Conflicting opinion polls highlight a closely contested November 3 election, with Donald Trump-backed Ramaswamy facing a strong challenge from Democrat Amy Acton.

WASHINGTON, Oct 20: Indian-American Republican Vivek Ramaswamy is locked in a competitive battle with Democratic candidate Amy Acton in the Ohio gubernatorial election, as recent surveys offer differing assessments of the contest ahead of the November 3 vote.

An ActiVote poll conducted between September 27 and October 19 placed Ramaswamy three percentage points ahead of Acton. However, a CNN-SSRS survey conducted from September 29 to October 5 showed Acton leading by eight points, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the race.

Ramaswamy, 41, entered the contest with the backing of US President Donald Trump, who endorsed him last year. Despite that support, the entrepreneur has faced a challenging campaign against Acton, a former Ohio health director who has emerged as a formidable Democratic contender.

If elected, Ramaswamy would become the third person of Indian origin to serve as a US state governor, following Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Nikki Haley of South Carolina.

The election is also drawing attention because Ohio has traditionally been a competitive political battleground, although Republicans have strengthened their position in recent presidential contests.

Ramaswamy’s campaign encountered a setback in July during an appearance before college students in Ohio. His speech, which contrasted people he described as winners with those he called whiners, prompted boos and heckling from sections of the audience. He was eventually forced to leave the stage.

The incident raised questions about his ability to connect with voters beyond his established political supporters.

Born in Cincinnati on August 9, 1985, Ramaswamy is the son of Indian immigrants whose roots lie in Palakkad, Kerala. Raised in Ohio, he developed an early interest in music and sports, becoming an accomplished pianist and a nationally ranked tennis player.

He graduated from Yale Law School in 2013 and subsequently built a career in the biotechnology and investment sectors, becoming a multimillionaire before entering national politics.

Ramaswamy launched his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 2023 but withdrew after a disappointing performance in the Iowa caucuses. He subsequently endorsed Trump, strengthening his ties with the Republican leader.

Following Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, Ramaswamy was initially selected alongside Elon Musk to help lead the Department of Government Efficiency initiative. He stepped away from that role and announced his campaign for Ohio governor.

The close contest has prompted prominent Republican figures to increase their involvement in the state. Trump and Vice President JD Vance have made repeated visits to Ohio in an effort to maintain Republican support. Vance was scheduled to campaign in Cincinnati on Wednesday, marking his second election rally in the state within a fortnight.

Trump carried Ohio in the 2016, 2020 and 2024 presidential elections, reinforcing the state’s importance to the Republican Party. However, the gubernatorial race presents a separate challenge, with voters assessing the candidates’ state-level priorities and leadership credentials.

Prediction markets Kalshi and Polymarket also indicated a competitive contest, although their reported probabilities on Monday favoured Acton, with the platforms showing approximately 70 per cent odds for her victory against 31 per cent for Ramaswamy. Such figures can fluctuate and should not be interpreted as definitive election forecasts.

Ohio has never elected a woman as governor, adding another dimension to Acton’s candidacy. Her campaign is seeking to capitalise on voter concerns and the opportunity to challenge Republican dominance in a state that has increasingly leaned towards the party in national elections.

With conflicting polling results and prominent national figures participating in the campaign, the final weeks before November 3 are expected to be crucial. Ramaswamy will need to consolidate Republican support while appealing to undecided voters, whereas Acton will seek to turn her polling strength into electoral support.

The outcome will determine not only Ohio’s next governor but also whether Ramaswamy can translate his national political profile and presidential endorsement into success in his home state.
