VVS Laxman to Coach India at Asian Games as Gambhir Focuses on West Indies ODIs
Former India batter takes charge of the men's squad for the Aichi-Nagoya Games as the senior team prepares for its next international assignment.
NEW DELHI, Sept. 3: Former India batter VVS Laxman will coach the country’s men’s cricket team at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, taking charge of the squad while head coach Gautam Gambhir remains with the senior side for its upcoming ODI assignment against the West Indies.
Laxman, who currently heads the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Centre of Excellence, will lead the Asian Games campaign in Aichi-Nagoya. The decision allows the national coaching setup to manage India’s commitments across two international competitions taking place during the same period.
Gambhir is expected to remain focused on India’s ODI series against the West Indies, making Laxman’s experience particularly valuable as India prepares a separate group of players for the multi-sport event.
The Asian Games will be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4, with cricket forming part of India’s campaign across a broad range of disciplines. India is scheduled to participate in 34 sports at the Games.
Laxman’s appointment adds another significant responsibility to his growing role within Indian cricket. His previous experience with the national setup and his work at the Centre of Excellence are expected to help the team prepare for the competition.
The Asian Games squad will provide an opportunity for several players to strengthen their international credentials while India seeks a strong showing at the continental multi-sport event.
