Washington State Mayors’ Delegation Visits India to Strengthen Bilateral Ties
A 12 member delegation led by Senator Tina Orwall will visit New Delhi, Bhubaneswar and Mumbai from October 11 to 18 to explore cooperation and build lasting partnerships.
WASHINGTON, Oct 12: A delegation of mayors representing seven cities in Washington state has embarked on a week-long visit to India to strengthen ties, encourage exchanges and explore opportunities for long-term cooperation between the two sides.
The 12-member delegation, led by Washington state Senator Tina Orwall, is visiting India from October 11 to 18. The itinerary includes New Delhi, Bhubaneswar and Mumbai, marking the first initiative of its kind involving mayors from the US state.
Announcing the visit on Sunday, the Consulate General of India in Seattle welcomed the delegation in a social media post titled “Bon Voyage to Incredible India: The 1st Mayors’ Delegation from Washington State”.
The consulate said the group had departed from Seattle for its inaugural visit to India, expressing hope that the programme would encourage meaningful discussions, closer engagement and lasting partnerships between India and Washington state.
The delegation includes Dana Ralph, Mayor of Kent; Thomas McLeod, Mayor of Tukwila; Mark Mullet, Mayor of Issaquah; Joseph Marine, Mayor of Mukilteo; Ronald J Frederick, Mayor of DuPont; Stanley L K Flemming, Mayor of University Place; and Mohammed Egal, Mayor of SeaTac.
Other members include DuPont councilmember Jugal Thakor, University Place Mayor Pro Tem Denise McCluskey, Kent councilmember Toni Troutner and Kurt Hanson, economic development director for Kent.
The participation of elected representatives and local economic development officials is expected to provide opportunities to exchange views on municipal governance, economic development and community engagement.
The visit also offers a platform for the delegation to learn about India’s urban development priorities and explore areas where local governments can establish closer working relationships.
New Delhi, Bhubaneswar and Mumbai provide distinct settings for discussions on governance, infrastructure, business and urban growth. Meetings during the visit could help build connections between local authorities and other stakeholders, opening avenues for future collaboration.
The Indian Consulate in Seattle wished the delegation a productive and enriching visit, emphasising the importance of stronger relations, constructive exchanges and enduring partnerships between India and Washington state.
The initiative highlights the role of local-level engagement in complementing broader India-US relations. By bringing municipal leaders together, the visit aims to create opportunities for dialogue and cooperation that can benefit communities on both sides.
The outcomes of the programme will depend on the discussions held during the visit and any follow-up initiatives agreed upon by the participating representatives.
