West Asia Tensions Escalate With Strikes, Drone Interceptions Across Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon
West Asia tensions escalate further as a series of security
BAGHDAD, Mar 3: West Asia tensions escalate further as a series of security incidents were reported on Tuesday in Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, signalling deepening regional instability.
In Iraq, an armed faction claimed responsibility for targeting a hotel in Erbil, alleging that the facility houses American personnel, according to regional media reports.
Saudi Arabia’s Defence Ministry stated that eight drones were intercepted and destroyed near Riyadh and Al-Kharj. Officials described the aerial interceptions as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard critical infrastructure.
In Lebanon, reports said an Israeli strike hit the headquarters of Al-Manar television, a broadcaster linked to Hezbollah. The outlet reportedly resumed transmission shortly after the attack. Separately, the Israeli military confirmed that an overnight operation in Beirut killed Hussein Makled, identified as the head of Hezbollah’s intelligence unit.
The developments come amid mounting cross-border hostilities that have heightened fears of a broader regional spillover.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended recent joint US-Israeli military actions against Iran, calling them necessary to counter what he described as extremist threats. In media remarks, he said the operations were aimed at protecting Israel, the United States and the wider international community.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi accused Washington of entering what he termed a “war of choice” in support of Israel. In a statement posted on social media, he rejected allegations of an Iranian threat and criticised US involvement.
His comments followed statements by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said recent American military actions were intended to neutralise risks posed by Iran’s short-range ballistic missile programme and naval capabilities, particularly threats to international shipping routes.
As diplomatic rhetoric intensifies alongside military activity, concerns are growing over the potential for further escalation across the region.
