West Bengal prepares for TET for 90,000 in service teachers

The state School Education Department has directed examination authorities to begin preparations for a large scale Teacher Eligibility Test as part of efforts to meet eligibility requirements.

KOLKATA, Sept 13: The West Bengal School Education Department has instructed examination authorities to begin preparations for a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for around 90,000 in service teachers following a direction from the Supreme Court.

The move is aimed at ensuring that serving teachers meet the eligibility requirements prescribed for teaching positions. The proposed examination is expected to be one of the largest such exercises undertaken for in service educators in the state.

The department has asked the concerned examination authorities to make the necessary preparations for conducting the test. The development comes amid continuing discussions over teacher qualifications and compliance with national standards governing school education.

Teacher organisations and representatives in the state have closely followed the issue, particularly because the proposed exercise involves a large number of teachers already working in schools.

The examination is expected to test the professional and subject knowledge required for teachers to continue meeting eligibility norms. Authorities will have to work out the detailed schedule, registration process and other operational arrangements before the test is conducted.

The development also places considerable responsibility on the state education machinery to ensure that the process is implemented transparently and without disrupting regular classroom activities.

The proposed exercise follows the Supreme Court’s direction and is being viewed as an important step towards aligning teacher eligibility with prescribed educational standards.

With around 90,000 in service teachers potentially involved, the exercise could have a significant impact on school administration and teacher preparation across West Bengal.
