Western Disturbance Set to Bring Widespread Rain Across J&K Over Next 36 Hours

J&K Faces Widespread Rainfall Over Next 36 Hours as Western Disturbance Hits

Srinagar, Apr 3: Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for widespread moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 36 hours as a strong Western Disturbance approaches the region, officials from the Meteorological Department said on Friday.

The MeT office predicted generally cloudy conditions with intermittent light to moderate rain and snowfall in higher reaches across several parts of the union territory from April 3 to 4. Thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are also expected during this period.

Authorities warned that certain areas in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions may witness brief but intense heavy showers, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging in low-lying zones.

High-altitude regions and key mountain passes including Zojila, Sinthan Top, Mughal Road, Sadhna Top, and Razdan Top are likely to see fresh snowfall, which may disrupt traffic. Middle-elevation areas between 2,100 and 2,400 metres could also experience light snowfall.

Weather conditions are expected to improve slightly on April 5–6 with partly cloudy skies and isolated rain, though another spell of light to moderate rain and snowfall is forecast from April 7–9, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Brief light showers may occur on April 10–11, with predominantly dry weather expected from April 12–15.

Jammu and Kashmir recorded a 34% deficit in seasonal rainfall in March, heightening concerns over water availability in the region.
