World Weightlifting Championships: Mirabai Chanu Clinches Silver Medal
The 2017 world champion and Olympic medallist lifted a total of 199kg to secure her third podium finish at the global event.
Forde (Norway), Oct 3: India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu clinched a silver medal in the women’s 48kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships, adding another accolade to her illustrious career. This marks her third podium finish at the prestigious event, having earlier won gold in 2017 and silver in 2022.
Competing after moving down from the 49kg division, Chanu registered a total lift of 199kg (84kg in snatch + 115kg in clean and jerk). Despite struggling in the snatch failing twice at 87kg she regained her composure in the clean and jerk, completing all three lifts (109kg, 112kg, and 115kg) with confidence.
A former world record holder in clean and jerk, Chanu’s 115kg lift was her best since the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where she had also won silver. Chief coach Vijay Sharma had said the target this time was to breach the 200kg mark, bringing her closer to her earlier lifts in the 49kg division.
North Korea’s Ri Song Gum clinched gold with a world record-breaking total of 213kg (91kg + 122kg), while Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen settled for bronze with 198kg (88kg + 110kg).
Chanu’s consistent performances reaffirm her position as one of the most decorated weightlifters in India’s sporting history.
