X Platform’s CEO Linda Yaccarino Highlights Removal of Hundreds of Hamas-Affiliated Accounts Amidst Content Cleanup Efforts

Elon Musk's Social Media Platform, X, Takes Decisive Actions Against Hamas-Linked Accounts During Israel-Hamas Conflict

12-10-2023: In the midst of the Israel-Hamas conflict, Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has taken a firm stance against illegal content. The CEO of the company, formerly known as Twitter, Linda Yaccarino, disclosed that X has removed hundreds of Hamas-linked accounts and marked thousands of pieces of content as part of its efforts to maintain the platform’s integrity. This move comes in response to the European Union’s stringent digital rules aimed at regulating content on social media platforms.

Addressing European Commissioner Thierry Breton’s request for information regarding X’s compliance with the EU’s Digital Services Act, Yaccarino emphasized the platform’s proactive measures. X has identified and removed numerous Hamas-affiliated accounts and continues to effectively combat fake and manipulated content, adapting to the ever-evolving crisis.

Under the EU’s Digital Services Act, social media companies face the obligation to intensify their content policing efforts or face substantial fines. Yaccarino reiterated X’s commitment to not providing a platform for terrorist organizations or violent extremist groups, assuring that such accounts are promptly removed.

X’s efforts also include the removal or labeling of tens of thousands of pieces of content. The platform has introduced Community Notes, a feature that allows users to add their own fact-checks to posts, making fact-checks visible on thousands of posts and generating millions of impressions.

Since Elon Musk’s acquisition and renaming of Twitter to X, experts have criticized the platform for promoting falsehoods and unreliable content. Additionally, a study commissioned by the EU identified X as the worst-performing platform for online disinformation.

X’s actions reflect the ongoing challenge faced by various social media platforms, including TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook, in managing and countering unsubstantiated rumors and falsehoods related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. This challenge highlights the persistent issue of disinformation in the digital age, where false narratives can quickly capture global attention.
