Chinese leaders honour fallen heroes at Tian'anmen Square ahead of National Day celebrations.
BEIJING, Sept 30: Chinese President Xi Jinping and other senior Communist Party and state leaders on Wednesday attended a ceremony at Tian’anmen Square to honour national heroes who lost their lives in the service of the country.
The event was held on September 30, observed in China as Martyrs’ Day, a day ahead of the country’s National Day celebrations.
Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission, has taken part in the annual commemoration alongside other senior officials since Martyrs’ Day was formally established in 2014.
During the ceremony, nine large flower baskets were placed before the Monument to the People’s Heroes at Tian’anmen Square, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
China will begin its week-long National Day holiday on Thursday, with official celebrations marking the country’s National Day.
