Yoga Emerging As Preventive Healthcare, Helping Reduce India’s Healthcare Burden

Experts highlight yoga’s role in lifestyle disease prevention and improved well-being

New Delhi, Sep 13: Yoga is increasingly being recognised as a powerful tool in preventive healthcare, significantly reducing the overall healthcare burden in India, experts and health officials said on Saturday.

They noted that yoga’s emphasis on physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation helps prevent and manage lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and stress-related disorders, which account for a major share of healthcare expenditure in the country.

“Yoga is not just an exercise; it is a holistic approach to health. By making yoga a part of daily routine, people can reduce their dependency on expensive medical treatments and lead healthier lives,” a senior health official said.

With initiatives like International Day of Yoga, AYUSH ministry programmes, and yoga’s growing integration into schools and workplaces, the practice is steadily becoming a mainstream healthcare solution.

Health experts believe that widespread adoption of yoga could save billions in healthcare costs annually while promoting mental and physical wellness across all age groups.
