Yunus Sparks Row in Farewell Speech with ‘Seven Sisters’ Reference Aimed at India
Bangladesh interim chief highlights regional economic vision, stronger China ties and sovereignty push amid strained relations with India
Bangladesh, Feb 17 : In his final address to the nation, Bangladesh Interim Government Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus triggered fresh diplomatic unease with remarks referencing India’s northeastern “Seven Sisters” states.
Speaking about regional connectivity and economic expansion, Yunus said Bangladesh’s maritime access offers a gateway to global markets. He grouped Nepal, Bhutan and the “Seven Sisters” together while outlining the region’s economic potential, stating that economic zones, trade agreements and duty-free market access could transform the area into a manufacturing hub.
The phrasing drew attention as India’s northeastern states are integral parts of the country, and the comment comes against the backdrop of already fragile India-Bangladesh ties.
Emphasis on sovereignty and foreign policy shift
Without directly naming India or the previous Sheikh Hasina-led government, Yunus asserted that his administration restored Bangladesh’s sovereignty and national interest. He described the country as no longer being influenced by external directives and pledged a foreign policy rooted in mutual respect and strategic balance.
He also outlined key steps taken during his tenure, including the introduction of approximately 130 new laws, amendments to several existing ones and nearly 600 executive orders, a majority of which he claimed have been implemented.
Expanding engagement with China
Yunus highlighted strengthening cooperation with Beijing, pointing to progress on the Teesta River project and construction of a 1,000-bed international hospital in Nilphamari with Chinese support. He described these initiatives as part of broader efforts to deepen bilateral engagement.
The interim chief further underlined military modernisation measures undertaken during his term, stating that the armed forces had been reinforced to respond to potential threats.
Political backdrop
Yunus assumed office after the removal of Sheikh Hasina in 2024, overseeing a politically sensitive transition period. His tenure witnessed shifts in foreign policy priorities and growing strategic recalibration in Dhaka’s external engagements.
The ‘Seven Sisters’ remark, made during his farewell speech, has now added another layer to the evolving regional diplomatic landscape.
