Zubeen Garg Death Case: Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma Remanded to 14-Day SIT Custody
SIT custody granted for further interrogation and investigation into sequence of events leading to singer Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore
In a significant development in the investigation of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg’s death, businessman Shyamkanu Mahanta and the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma were remanded to 14-day custody of the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Both accused were produced late Wednesday before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) at his residence in Geetanagar’s Alpana Apartment, Guwahati, under tight security. The CJM approved their remand, enabling the SIT to interrogate them and probe their alleged roles in the circumstances leading to Garg’s demise in Singapore.
Mahanta, recently brought back from Singapore via Delhi, and Sharma, responsible for managing Garg’s professional engagements, have been under close surveillance since their initial detention. Authorities emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, including reconstructing the events surrounding the singer’s final days. Security was heightened both at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport during Mahanta’s transfer and at the magistrate’s residence, highlighting the intense public attention on the case.
The SIT stated that the extended custody is crucial for collecting evidence, cross-verifying testimonies, and mapping the timeline of Garg’s last days abroad.
Zubeen Garg, a celebrated voice of Assam, passed away suddenly in Singapore, prompting widespread grief and demands for a transparent investigation. The Assam government has assured that a comprehensive probe will be conducted to ensure justice.
Notices have also been sent to several individuals who were either traveling with Garg or were associated with the event in Singapore, including Mahanta, Sharma, members of the Singapore Assam Association, and close associates of the singer.
