SRINAGAR, April 23: In a strong show of solidarity with the victims of the gruesome terror attack in Pahalgam, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday led a protest march in Srinagar, condemning the killing of 26 innocent civilians, most of them tourists.
The protest began at the PDP headquarters near Sher-e-Kashmir Park, where Mehbooba Mufti, accompanied by senior party leaders and scores of party workers, gathered to voice their outrage. The protesters marched towards the iconic Lal Chowk, the heart of the city, in a peaceful procession.
Carrying placards with powerful messages such as “This is an attack on all of us,” “Killing innocents is an act of terror,” and “Stop innocent killings,” the PDP cadre expressed deep anguish over the brutal assault that has shaken the Valley and the entire nation.
Mehbooba Mufti, addressing the media during the march, said, “The massacre in Pahalgam is not just an attack on innocent lives but an assault on Kashmir’s culture of hospitality and peace. We cannot let our land become a graveyard for those who come here in trust and faith.”
The terror attack, which occurred on Tuesday in the Baisaran meadows near the Pahalgam resort in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, has been described as one of the most horrific strikes on civilians in recent years. The fact that the victims were primarily tourists has heightened concerns about the security of visitors and the implications for the region’s tourism-driven economy.
PDP leaders said the protest was meant to not only denounce the killings but also send a strong message that Kashmiris stand united against terrorism and violence in all its forms. They urged for a broader societal rejection of extremist ideologies and a reaffirmation of the region’s ethos of coexistence.
The march concluded at Lal Chowk with a silent prayer for the victims and an appeal to the public to raise their voices against such acts of barbarity. The PDP leadership also called upon the administration to ensure justice for the victims and demanded heightened security measures to prevent such attacks in the future.
