Study Highlights Need for Five Eyes Cooperation Against Khalistani Threats
Report calls for intelligence sharing, monitoring of fundraising, and global coordination to counter Khalistani extremist networks
Canberra, Sep 15: A recent report has urged Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and the United States to collaborate with Canada in dismantling global Khalistani extremist fundraising and propaganda networks.
The report emphasizes coordinated monitoring of suspicious non-profit activities, intelligence sharing, and political distancing from separatist lobbies as key steps in countering the threat. Khalistani extremism, long regarded as an “Indian issue,” is now recognized as a global security concern following Canada’s official acknowledgment.
Amit Sarwal, co-founder of The Australia Today, wrote, “If Five Eyes democracies truly believe in safeguarding pluralism and protecting their diverse communities, they must act together. Australia, with its growing Indian diaspora and deepening strategic ties with New Delhi, is well placed to lead this collective effort. Canada has broken the silence. Now it is time for its allies Australia included to stand firm and follow suit.”
Canada recently confirmed that banned extremist groups such as Babbar Khalsa International and the International Sikh Youth Federation are promoting separatism and violence on its soil. The 2025 Assessment of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Risks identified these groups as national security threats, marking a significant shift in Ottawa’s counterterrorism strategy.
The report notes that while these extremist operations target India, they also pose serious implications for Canadian national security and foreign policy. The move builds on the 2024 Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) report, which flagged Canada-based Khalistani extremists (CBKEs) as ongoing national security threats.
India has long voiced concerns over Canada providing a haven for such elements. The recent acknowledgement marks a diplomatic breakthrough, highlighting the need for Five Eyes intelligence partners to adopt similar measures to curb Khalistani extremism globally.
