Nepal Floods: Death Toll Reaches 1,377, Search Intensifies for Over 5,000 Missing
Rescue teams have recovered hundreds of bodies from the worst-hit districts, while more than 13,600 people have been brought to safety following the devastating flash floods.
KATHMANDU, Sept 10: The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal rose to 1,377 on Thursday as authorities recovered more bodies from several affected districts, while search and rescue operations continued for 5,130 people reported missing.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Chitwan recorded the highest number of recovered bodies at 364, followed by Nawalparasi East with 228 and Nawalparasi West with 222.
Nuwakot has reported 198 deaths, while 178 bodies have been recovered from Rasuwa, 77 from Gorkha, 70 from Dhading and 38 from Tanahu.
Two other victims died while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu, taking the overall toll to 1,377.
A joint command comprising security personnel has been deployed to continue search and rescue operations across the affected areas. Teams are working to locate those still unaccounted for amid extensive damage to roads, bridges, homes and other infrastructure.
Authorities said 13,656 people have so far been rescued from the flood-hit areas.
The disaster was triggered on August 26 after an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border caused a massive surge of water. The resulting floods devastated settlements across northern and central parts of Nepal.
The Bhotekoshi River, which flows southward from the Himalayan border region, carried the floodwaters into downstream areas. The powerful current swept away houses, vehicles, roads and bridges and caused extensive damage to hydropower projects.
The disaster also caused casualties across the border in China. At least 43 people were killed on the Chinese side, while more than 500 people were still reported missing in Tibet, according to Chinese media reports.
Rescue agencies remain engaged in operations across the affected districts as authorities continue efforts to account for missing residents and assess the full extent of the destruction caused by the floods.
