WPAC 2025: PCI Reveals Official Medals for India’s Biggest Para-Sport Spectacle
Medals reflect Indian heritage, inclusivity, and athletic excellence ahead of New Delhi championships
New Delhi, Sept 19: India’s countdown to hosting the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships (WPAC) gained momentum on Thursday as the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) unveiled the official medals for the grand event.
Scheduled from September 27 to October 5, 2025, the championships will feature over 2,200 para-athletes and support staff from 104 countries competing in 186 medal events, making it the largest international para-sport gathering ever hosted in India.
The medals embody the spirit of para-sport, Indian heritage, and sporting excellence. The front features traditional Indian motifs, centering on the championship’s name, icons of a wheelchair racer, a discus thrower, and India’s national flower, the lotus. The reverse highlights inclusivity with Braille above the “New Delhi 2025” inscription, lotus-inspired patterns, and modern geometric designs, completed with a striking blue ribbon.
PCI President Devendra Jhajharia said, “Unveiling these medals marks the beginning of a historic journey. They celebrate not just victory but the ethos of effort, inclusivity, and resilience. Hosting athletes from 104 countries, New Delhi is poised to deliver a world-class championship that inspires all.”
Paul Fitzgerald, head of World Para Athletics, added: “The 2025 WPAC will be the first major championship of the new Paralympic cycle leading to Los Angeles 2028. These unique medals, blending traditional Indian motifs with symbols of athletic achievement and accessibility, underscore the event’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural pride. India’s progress in para-athletics is inspiring, and we look forward to welcoming the world’s best athletes.”
Paralympic gold medalists Navdeep Singh and Praveen Kumar expressed pride and motivation, highlighting the medals as a symbol of the journey, resilience, and triumph of para-athletes competing on home soil.
The upbeat anthem “Udaan Bhar,” featuring rap elements, was also launched during the medal unveiling, further energizing athletes and audiences ahead of the championships.
