Telangana CM Urges Public Support for Musi River Rejuvenation Project

CM Revanth Reddy highlights flood risks, climate challenges, and restoration efforts during Batukamma Kunta Lake inauguration

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Sunday appealed to the public to back the ambitious Musi Rejuvenation Project, aimed at reviving the once extinct river and protecting Hyderabad from future flooding.

Speaking at the inauguration of the restored Batukamma Kunta Lake in Amberpet, the CM emphasized that even minimal rainfall in Hyderabad can lead to flooding due to the current state of the Musi river and its catchment areas. Highlighting the challenges posed by climate change and frequent cloudbursts, he said the state government has developed plans to strengthen infrastructure and enhance environmental protection.

“Previous governments neglected the Musi, turning it into a dumping ground. Our administration is committed to reviving water bodies, lakes, and ponds under the Musi project to safeguard the city from natural calamities,” CM Revanth Reddy stated.

He further directed Hyderabad in charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar to prepare proposals for rehabilitating residents affected by floods in the Musi catchment areas of Amberpet. Warning citizens against falling prey to land mafia schemes, the CM reiterated that the government stands by the poor and vulnerable.

The Chief Minister praised the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) for removing encroachments and restoring water bodies, including the Batukamma Kunta Lake, which was rejuvenated at a cost of Rs 7.15 crore. HYDRAA has restored six lakes so far at a total cost of Rs 58.40 crore.

The event witnessed a large gathering of women performing the traditional Bathukamma celebrations near the lake in honor of the Chief Minister.

In addition, CM Revanth Reddy laid the foundation stone for 39 new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Hyderabad, at a total cost of Rs 3,849.10 crore, further strengthening the city’s water and sanitation infrastructure.
