London: Mahatma Gandhi Statue Vandalised Ahead of October 2, India Condemns Incident

Tavistock Square monument defaced with anti-India graffiti just days before October 2; High Commission urges prompt action

Days ahead of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Tavistock Square in London was vandalised on Monday, defaced with anti India graffiti.

The incident drew swift condemnation from India, with the Indian High Commission in the UK describing it as a “shameful act of vandalism.”

In a statement on X, the High Commission said, “@HCI_London is deeply saddened and strongly condemns the shameful act of vandalism of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Tavistock Square in London.”

The statement added, “This is not just vandalism, but a violent attack on the idea of nonviolence, three days before the International Day of Nonviolence, and on the legacy of the Mahatma.”

The High Commission has raised the matter with local authorities, demanding immediate action against those responsible. A team from the High Commission also visited the site to coordinate restoration efforts and ensure the statue is returned to its original dignity.
