Maithili Thakur Pays Tribute to Late ‘Bihar Kokila’ Sharda Sinha Ahead of Chhath Puja

Folk Singer Reflects on Sharda Sinha’s Legacy and Her Connection to Chhath Festival; Sparks Buzz Ahead of Bihar Assembly Elections

Patna, Oct 15: Renowned folk and devotional singer Maithili Thakur paid tribute to the late legendary Sharda Sinha during her visit to Patna on Tuesday, ahead of the upcoming Chhath Puja celebrations. Speaking to ANI, Thakur said, “Not just me, but the whole nation will miss her. Even Biharis living abroad will feel the void. She connected everyone to the spirit of Chhath through her voice. We all will miss her dearly.”

Sharda Sinha, fondly known as the “Bihar Kokila,” was a towering figure in Indian folk music. Honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2018 and a National Film Award, Sinha earned nationwide recognition for her soulful renditions in Bhojpuri and Maithili music. Her songs, especially those dedicated to the Chhath festival, became integral to the celebrations, resonating deeply with audiences in Bihar and across India.

Sinha passed away on November 5, 2024, at the age of 72, after a prolonged battle with multiple myeloma. Her death left a significant void in the world of regional music. Over her decades long career, which began in the 1970s, she not only popularized folk music but also bridged regional traditions with national audiences, making her songs synonymous with Chhath Mahaparv.

Amid paying tribute, Maithili Thakur’s visit also sparked political speculation. Reports suggest the singer may contest in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. She officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday and is expected to contest from Alinagar in Darbhanga. The Bihar assembly elections, covering all 243 seats, are scheduled for November 6 and 11, with results to be announced on November 14.

Maithili Thakur’s homage to Sharda Sinha underscores the enduring legacy of the “Bihar Kokila” while marking a new chapter in the young singer’s journey, both musically and politically.
