CJI Directs Registry to Prioritise and List Urgent Cases for Lawyers
Supreme Court to Scrutinise Urgent Case Requests Before Listing
New Delhi, Dec 22: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Monday instructed lawyers to submit reasons to the Supreme Court Registry when seeking urgent hearings, rather than directly mentioning cases. The Registry will scrutinise these submissions and list matters deemed urgent accordingly.
The CJI made these directions while sitting with Justice Joymalya Bagchi on a special vacation bench to hear pressing matters requiring immediate judicial intervention. “Instead of mentioning, furnish reasons to Registry. The reasons will be scrutinised, and if found urgent, the matter shall be tentatively listed on December 26 or December 29,” the CJI said.
The special sitting ensures timely consideration of urgent cases during the Supreme Court’s vacation period. Earlier, on Friday, CJI Kant had expressed his willingness to sit on December 22, the first day of the Court’s Christmas and New Year holidays, specifically for urgent matters.
