Nvidia to Acquire Hugging Face in $13 Billion AI Push
Chip giant strengthens its open source artificial intelligence strategy as demand for AI models and computing infrastructure accelerates.
Mumbai, Sep 04 : Nvidia has announced plans to acquire artificial intelligence platform Hugging Face in a deal valued at nearly $13 billion, marking one of the chipmaker’s biggest moves to expand its position across the rapidly growing AI ecosystem.
The proposed acquisition comes as demand for AI computing continues to surge and technology companies increasingly compete to control the software, models and infrastructure powering next-generation applications.
Hugging Face has become a major hub for open-source artificial intelligence, allowing developers and researchers to share, build and access a wide range of machine-learning models and datasets. Nvidia said the platform’s open approach would remain central to its future following the transaction.
Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang has backed Hugging Face’s role in making AI development more accessible. The chipmaker is already a significant contributor to the platform, with hundreds of AI models shared through its ecosystem.
The acquisition would give Nvidia a stronger presence beyond its core semiconductor business. While its graphics processors remain essential to training and running advanced AI systems, control over software platforms and developer communities is becoming increasingly important as the industry matures.
The move also highlights the growing commercial value of open-source AI. Companies are seeking ways to develop powerful models while giving businesses and independent developers greater flexibility in adapting the technology for different applications.
Nvidia has expanded aggressively into AI infrastructure in recent years, supplying processors and networking technologies used by cloud providers, research institutions and technology companies. Adding Hugging Face could help strengthen the connection between that hardware ecosystem and the developers creating AI applications.
The transaction comes at a time when investors are closely watching Nvidia’s efforts to maintain its leadership as competition increases across artificial intelligence. Major technology companies are investing heavily in processors, cloud infrastructure, foundation models and AI-powered software.
If completed, the acquisition could reshape the relationship between AI hardware and open-source development, giving Nvidia an influential role in both the computing layer and the developer ecosystem surrounding artificial intelligence.
