Auli Turns Into ‘Mini Switzerland’ as Heavy Snowfall Blankets the Hills

Snowfall boosts tourism but disrupts roads and daily life in Chamoli district

Gopeshwar/Chamoli, Jan 24, 2026: Auli, the popular hill station in Uttarakhand, has earned the title of ‘Mini Switzerland of India’ once again after heavy snowfall blanketed the region on Friday. The picturesque landscape, now covered in thick white snow, has delighted tourists while simultaneously affecting daily life and transport. Over 50 villages in Chamoli district are snowbound, with major highways temporarily closed.

Tourism Thrives, Roads Blocked
The first major snowfall of the season has created perfect conditions for skiing and other snow activities in Auli. Visitors were seen enjoying the winter landscape and capturing the scenic beauty. Fresh snow has also been reported in high-altitude regions, including Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib, Niti Valley, and Mana.

However, several key routes are affected: the Badrinath highway is closed beyond Hanuman Chatti, the Jyotirmath–Auli road is blocked near Kawan Bad, and the Karnprayag–Gairsain highway faces disruptions between Diwali Khal and Kalimat. While BRO and military vehicles continue to operate, civilian traffic has been restricted, and police are allowing only local vehicles to access Auli.

Safety Measures and Advisory
Chamoli police and local administration have increased security, stopping vehicles on slippery roads and making alternative arrangements. Tourists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay updated via the meteorological department and local authorities.

Weather Outlook
Following a three-month dry spell, this snowfall brings a boost to tourism. The IMD has forecast light to moderate snowfall in higher regions over the next few days. While Auli offers a winter wonderland experience, visitors are urged to exercise caution and plan travel carefully.
