Republic Day Parade Highlights Cultural Heritage of Jammu and Kashmir

From Kani shawls to Rouf and Kud, the Kartavya Path display reflects the Union territory’s living heritage

NEW DELHI, Jan 26: The cultural legacy of Jammu and Kashmir unfolded vividly on Kartavya Path during the 77th Republic Day parade, with a tableau that highlighted the region’s artistic traditions, craftsmanship and performing arts.

The presentation featured iconic artefacts including the engraved samavaar, finely woven Kani shawls adorned with symbolic motifs, hand knotted carpets with intricate geometric designs, and delicately carved walnut wood creations, each representing generations of skilled craftsmanship.

Adding to the visual richness were brightly coloured papier mache works and Basohli style Pahari miniature paintings, whose expressive forms reflected a heritage shaped by devotion and refined artistic sensibilities.

The tableau also showcased saffron blossoms, their deep purple flowers and vivid crimson threads symbolising the region’s enduring connection to land, labour and tradition.

A live musical ensemble blending the sounds of rabab, santoor and flute accompanied the display, creating an immersive soundscape. Performers in traditional attire animated the scene through a series of folk dances.

Classical and regional forms such as Rouf and Kud, along with the energetic traditions of Pahari, Bhadarwahi and Gojri, conveyed the cultural diversity, communal spirit and celebratory ethos of Jammu and Kashmir.
