The “Justice League” actor features in the Sundance Film Festival documentary Silenced, directed by Selina Miles, which explores how defamation laws are often used to silence survivors of abuse. “This is not about me. I have lost my ability to speak,” Heard says in the documentary, according to Variety. “I am not here to tell my story. I don’t want to tell my story. In fact, I don’t want to use my voice anymore. That’s the problem.”

In Silenced, Heard emphasizes the experiences of other survivors and highlights the work of international human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson, who has guided her through legal challenges. Heard’s marriage to Johnny Depp, lasting from 2015 to 2016, led to a global legal storm. Depp accused Heard of defamation over her Washington Post op-ed about domestic abuse, resulting in a $10.35 million judgment against her, while Depp was ordered to pay $2 million for one of three countersuits. The parties later settled, with Heard paying Depp $1 million, which he pledged to donate to charity.

“It gives me strength seeing other people take on the fight,” Heard says. “Looking at my daughter’s face as she grows up … I believe it can be better.”
