“CM Vijayan Urges FM Sitharaman for Judicial Probe into CJ Roy Suicide Case”

Kerala CM urges Union Finance Minister to order impartial inquiry, citing procedural lapses and family grievances.

Kerala, Jan 02 : Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman demanding a judicial probe into the tragic death of Confident Group founder C.J. Roy, who allegedly shot himself at his Bengaluru office on January 30 during an ongoing Income Tax search operation.

In his letter, CM Vijayan expressed deep concern over the incident, calling it a blot on the tax administration and highlighting the need for extreme caution in intrusive operations. He pointed out that while searches may be necessary in certain cases, procedural diligence is critical to prevent loss of life.

“The reports suggest a lack of required diligence contributed to the death of an entrepreneur,” Vijayan noted, emphasising that minimum essential protocols, such as the presence of independent witnesses and supervision during searches, appear to have been neglected. He referred to statements from Roy’s family alleging repeated harassment by officials despite full cooperation.

The CM stressed that a judicial inquiry, led by a former constitutional court judge, is necessary to examine the legal and administrative procedures, assess lapses, and ensure transparency. “Official reports or reiteration of legal compliance will not suffice. Only an impartial judicial probe can establish credibility and address the concerns of the bereaved family,” he said.

Vijayan also affirmed the importance of tackling tax evasion but cautioned that enforcement must never come at the cost of human life. He called for a time-bound judicial investigation to prevent recurrence of such incidents and to restore public trust in tax administration.
