Kashmir Sees Night Temperatures Climb Srinagar Hits 2.6°C

Post Chillai Kalan, Kashmir sees gradual warming; light rain and snow expected in higher altitudes

Srinagar, Feb 2: Night temperatures across Kashmir showed a slight rise on Monday, with Srinagar recording a minimum of 2.6°C, around three degrees above the seasonal average, officials said.

The city’s nighttime mercury has been steadily climbing since the end of Chillai Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period in the region. Gulmarg in Baramulla district remained the coldest spot in Jammu and Kashmir, with a minimum of minus 8°C, while Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded minus 5.5°C.

Other areas saw similar trends: Qazigund registered 0.7°C, Kokernag hit minus 0.6°C, and Kupwara recorded minus 1.3°C.

The 20-day Chillai Khurd (small cold) phase began on Saturday, following Chillai Kalan. It will be succeeded by the 10-day Chillai Bachha (baby cold) period. The Meteorological Department has forecast light rain across the plains, with snowfall in higher reaches, on Monday and Tuesday.
