Assam Strengthens Transport Network with Rs 747 Crore Bridge

Centre clears road and bridge projects while Majuli witnesses a wave of development initiatives worth over Rs 2,200 crore.

New Delhi, Feb 13 : The Centre has sanctioned infrastructure projects worth Rs 747.72 crore to enhance transportation networks across Assam, with a strong focus on improving mobility and supporting economic activity.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that Rs 617.98 crore has been approved for 10 road works under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF). In addition, Rs 129.74 crore has been allocated for 16 bridge constructions under the CRIF Setu Bandhan initiative.

Highlighting the impact of the projects, Gadkari said the measures are expected to streamline travel, strengthen regional links, and facilitate faster movement of goods and passengers. He added that better infrastructure would also stimulate trade and contribute to the state’s broader socio-economic progress.

Meanwhile, Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the construction of the Majuli–Jorhat bridge along with its approach highway during a ceremony at Manika Pathar in Garmur, marking a significant step toward accelerating development in the river island region.

During his visit to Majuli district, the Chief Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple initiatives valued at Rs 2,218 crore. Financial assistance was also distributed to 31,952 beneficiaries under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA).

Key public infrastructure projects unveiled include new facilities at Majuli Cultural University, such as a three-storey academic complex built at a cost of Rs 51 crore with a seating capacity of 1,880 students, and a four storey girls’ hostel designed to accommodate 178 residents.

Administrative capacity in the district received a boost with the opening of an Integrated District Commissioner’s Office in Garamur, constructed for Rs 24.83 crore, alongside a District Transport Officer’s Office developed at Rs 3.57 crore between Garmur and Kamalabari.

Additional projects inaugurated during the visit include a Government Model Degree College, the Dakshinpat Satra Museum, the Jyoti Bishnu Cultural Complex, offices for the Senior Superintendent of Police, and a bridge spanning the Lohit River at Selekghat collectively underscoring the state government’s push toward comprehensive regional development.
