Jammu Police orders time-bound SIT inquiry into firing attempt on former CM Farooq
IGP Jammu forms SIT to probe foiled firing attempt on Farooq Abdullah
Jammu, 14-03-2026: J&K Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the foiled firing attempt on former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah in Jammu, as the administration moves to conduct a detailed and time-bound investigation into the high-profile security breach. The SIT was formed on the directions of Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti, in view of the seriousness and sensitivity of the case.
According to the police order, the incident took place on the night of March 11 when Dr Abdullah was attending a marriage function at a banquet hall in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu. At around 10:10 pm, while the veteran leader was leaving the venue, an individual allegedly flashed a revolver and tried to open fire from close range. The attempt was, however, thwarted due to the swift intervention of police personnel and other security staff deployed with the protectee, preventing what could have turned into a far more serious incident.
Following the incident, a case was registered as FIR No. 29/2026 at Gangyal Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act. Police have already arrested the accused, identified in multiple reports as Kamal Singh Jamwal, and investigators are examining his motive, background, and possible circumstances connected with the attempted attack. Earlier reports also said the accused allegedly claimed he had been waiting for years for such an opportunity, adding to the gravity of the case and the urgency of the probe.
The SIT has been constituted under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jammu-Samba-Kathua Range, and includes senior officers from Jammu Police. Among those named in reports are SSP Sanjay Sharma, SP Headquarters Jammu Irshad Hussain Rather, DySP Arvind Kumar Sambyal and other officials tasked with carrying out a comprehensive inquiry. The order directs the team to investigate every aspect of the incident thoroughly and complete the process within a fixed timeframe.
The formation of the SIT comes amid heightened scrutiny over VIP security arrangements after the attempted attack. The incident has already prompted wider concern at both the political and administrative levels, with separate reviews also being initiated into security procedures surrounding Dr Abdullah’s movement and public appearances. The latest step by Jammu Police indicates that the case is being treated as a matter of exceptional sensitivity, with emphasis on accountability, fact-finding, and preventive follow-up.
