J&K Police’s Proactive Strategy Delivers Results, Boosts Security Efforts
Specialised Units and Terrain-Focused Operations Reduce Incidents in Jammu Region
Jammu, Mar 19: A revamped counter terror strategy by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, focusing on operations in mountainous and forested areas, has led to a noticeable decline in terror related incidents across the upper reaches of the Jammu region, sources said.
The shift in approach followed a surge in attacks during 2023–24 in border districts like Poonch and Rajouri, as well as parts of Udhampur and Kathua, which raised significant security concerns. After taking charge, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat introduced a terrain specific operational framework to tackle these challenges.
Specialised Units for Tough Terrains
Under the new strategy, two elite units Snow Leopards and Markhor were created within the Special Operations Group (SOG). While the Snow Leopards focus on high-altitude and snow bound areas, the Markhor units are deployed across forest belts and rugged mountainous zones often used by militants for infiltration and shelter.
Personnel selected for these units underwent advanced training in jungle warfare and endurance, including sessions with elite forces such as the Greyhounds in Andhra Pradesh. This capacity-building initiative has enhanced operational efficiency in difficult terrains.
Visible Impact on Ground
Officials said the restructured approach has strengthened intelligence coordination and improved area domination, resulting in a significant drop in terror incidents by 2025. The strategy has also helped restore a sense of security among residents in remote areas.
DGP Prabhat recently reiterated that operations have now shifted deeper into forests and higher reaches to target militants attempting to regroup. He noted that security forces are actively pursuing and neutralising threats in these regions.
Recalling Operation Mahadev, he said three Pakistani terrorists involved in the killing of 26 civilians in the Baisaran area of Pahalgam were eliminated after being tracked deep inside forest zones.
Authorities believe the continued focus on terrain based operations and specialised training will further strengthen counter terror efforts in the region.
