Avalanche Forces Closure of Srinagar–Leh Highway, Traffic Suspended
Rescue and snow clearance operations continue as multiple agencies search for missing persons
Srinagar, Mar 28: The Srinagar–Leh National Highway remained shut on Saturday following a devastating avalanche at Zojila Pass, as authorities intensified snow clearance and rescue operations.
At least seven people lost their lives in the incident on Friday after several vehicles were buried under heavy snow. Among the deceased was a ten year old child, officials confirmed.
Authorities stated that the highway has been temporarily closed to ensure safety and facilitate ongoing operations. Snow removal work is currently in progress, and traffic will only resume once the road is fully cleared of avalanche debris.
Multiple agencies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, CRPF, Ladakh Police, SDRF, and civil administration teams, have been deployed at the site. Rescue teams are continuing their search efforts to locate any missing individuals trapped under the snow.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation, while urging commuters to avoid the route until further notice.
