White House Plans Grand Ballroom Above Secure Underground Military Complex
Project includes upgraded emergency command centre and advanced protective features beneath East Wing expansion
Washington: The United States military is reportedly developing a large underground complex beneath a newly proposed ballroom at the White House, aimed at strengthening national security infrastructure.
According to statements by Donald Trump, the facility will include a modernised Presidential Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC), a secure command hub that has been in use since World War II. The upgraded structure is expected to support critical operations during emergencies.
The proposed ballroom, funded privately, will feature high-security enhancements such as bullet-resistant glass and drone defence systems. It is intended to host major state events, including international gatherings and official ceremonies.
While officials have confirmed that upgrades are underway, detailed information about the underground installation remains classified. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that specifics cannot be disclosed, citing security concerns.
The architectural design of the ballroom has drawn attention for its grand scale and classical elements, including Corinthian-style columns. However, the project has also faced criticism from preservation experts, who argue that its size may disrupt the historic character of the presidential residence.
Reports suggest that the sensitive nature of the underground construction allowed it to bypass standard approval procedures of the National Capital Planning Commission. Officials maintain that the development will enhance operational readiness and future resilience.
Legal challenges have also emerged, with the National Trust for Historic Preservation seeking to halt the project. A court hearing on the matter is expected shortly.
