Russian Drone, Missile Strikes Kill 2 in Kyiv, Ending Pause in Attacks
Overnight drone and missile strikes damage civilian sites across at least five districts as US envoys visit the Ukrainian capital for peace efforts
KYIV, Sept 8: Two people were killed and at least 10 others injured after Russia launched a wave of drone and missile strikes on Kyiv overnight Tuesday, Ukrainian authorities said, bringing an end to a brief pause in attacks on the capital.
The assault came as US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in Kyiv for their first official visit, as Washington stepped up efforts to broker an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported fires and damage in at least five districts of the capital. The Kyiv City Military Administration said civilian infrastructure was damaged at a minimum of 16 locations.
In the Holosiivskyi district, a 26-storey non-residential building was struck, while a separate site in the area caught fire, with flames spreading to a nearby commercial structure.
Emergency crews rescued one person during a search operation and evacuated two people from an apartment in a 16-storey residential building.
Several residents were also trapped inside a five-storey residential building in the Solomianskyi district. Emergency workers rescued at least 10 people from the building, authorities said.
Fires were also reported in the Darnytskyi and Podilskyi districts as rescue teams continued to assess the damage and respond to the overnight assault.
The strikes came after Kyiv experienced a relative lull in attacks over the weekend, coinciding with the arrival of the US officials. Their visit is part of renewed diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a possible pathway towards ending the conflict, which has continued to devastate cities and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.
