RTE Admission Dispute Escalates, Thousands of Students Face Uncertainty
Standoff between government and private schools threatens access to education under RTE scheme
India, Apr 09 : A major confrontation has emerged in the education sector as the Right to Education (RTE) admission process in Chhattisgarh faces significant disruption. The ongoing conflict between the state government and private schools has raised concerns over the future of thousands of students seeking admission under the RTE quota.
The government has initiated the 2026–27 admission cycle and warned private institutions of strict action, including derecognition, if they refuse to comply with RTE provisions. However, private school associations have strongly opposed the move, citing outdated reimbursement rates that have remained unchanged for over a decade.
According to reports, more than 38,000 applications have already been received through the online RTE portal, with a lottery-based system planned for seat allotment. Despite this, private institutions argue that the current reimbursement ₹7,000 for primary classes and ₹11,400 for upper primary is insufficient to cover rising operational costs.
The disagreement has escalated into a potential legal and administrative crisis. School management bodies have threatened a boycott of the admission process unless financial support is revised. This could severely impact over 3.6 lakh students currently benefiting from RTE across thousands of schools.
Experts warn that prolonged deadlock could undermine the objective of inclusive education and widen inequality. Parents are being advised to rely only on official communication channels amid growing confusion.
