India and Mauritius Strengthen Strategic Partnership Ties

Jaishankar highlights progress in development, energy, defence and capacity-building cooperation during Mauritius visit

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reiterated India’s resolve to further strengthen its partnership with Mauritius during his recent visit, underscoring expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

In a message to Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Jaishankar congratulated the country for successfully hosting the Indian Ocean Conference and appreciated the warm reception extended to the Indian delegation.

Referring to growing engagement between the two nations, Jaishankar recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in 2025, when bilateral ties were elevated to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership. He noted that this reflects long standing cultural and historical connections while paving the way for broader collaboration.

The minister highlighted progress under the development partnership framework, including implementation of a Special Economic Package agreed upon last year. He also pointed to India’s contribution to Mauritius’ healthcare sector, including the inauguration of a renal transplant unit at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, along with ongoing initiatives like an AYUSH Centre and community projects across various regions.

Sustainable energy remains a key pillar of cooperation. India has extended support through electric mobility, solar energy projects, and partnerships under global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance. Work is also underway on Mauritius’ first floating solar project with Indian involvement.

On the security front, Jaishankar announced plans to appoint a Defence Attache, aimed at boosting maritime coordination and hydrographic collaboration between the two sides.

Capacity-building efforts were also emphasised, including the rollout of the iGOT Karmayogi portal tailored for Mauritian civil servants, marking a first for any partner country.

Additionally, cooperation in education and labour sectors has advanced through institutional agreements and operationalisation of a labour mobility framework.

Energy security continues to be a shared priority, with both countries finalising a government level agreement for oil and gas supply. Jaishankar reaffirmed that India’s engagement with Mauritius remains guided by its regional and global outreach vision, stressing that the bilateral relationship is unique, resilient, and forward looking.
