After recent bail, Shabir Shah arrested again in old terror case and remanded to NIA custody
Separatist leader Shabir Shah arrested in 1996 terror case, sent to 10-day NIA remand
Jammu, 18-04-2026: Separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah was arrested by the National Investigation Agency in connection with a terror-related case dating back to 1996 and was on Saturday remanded to 10 days of NIA custody by a special court in Jammu, officials said.
Shah was taken into custody by the Srinagar branch of the NIA on Friday in relation to a case involving an attack on policemen during the funeral of a militant nearly three decades ago. Following his arrest, he was produced before the Patiala House Court in Delhi, which granted the agency a three-day transit remand.
Thereafter, the 72-year-old separatist leader was brought before the special NIA court in Jammu on Saturday. During the proceedings, the investigating agency sought his custodial interrogation in connection with the 1996 case.
After hearing the submissions made by the agency, the court allowed the plea and sent Shah to 10-day NIA remand, enabling investigators to question him further in the matter, officials added.
Shabir Shah had recently secured relief in two other cases. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court on March 12 in a terror-funding case and later by a Delhi court on March 28 in a money laundering case, after having remained in jail for nearly seven years.
