Centre Pushes Ethanol Expansion to Cut Fuel Imports

Policy shift aims to accelerate green energy transition and reduce crude oil dependence

New Delhi, April 29: The Union Government has proposed sweeping reforms to India’s fuel ecosystem by introducing higher ethanol blends such as E85 and E100, marking a significant step toward energy independence. The move is part of a broader strategy to reduce reliance on imported crude oil and promote cleaner alternatives.

Officials indicated that the new draft framework will allow automobile manufacturers to gradually transition towards flex fuel vehicles capable of running on ethanol rich blends. The policy also aligns with India’s climate commitments and its push for sustainable mobility.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the initiative but cautioned that infrastructure gaps particularly fuel distribution systems and vehicle compatibility must be addressed. Experts also highlighted the need to ensure that ethanol production does not impact food supply chains, especially in agrarian states.

The government has invited public feedback on the draft notification, signalling a consultative approach before final implementation.
