Haaland Nets Brace as Norway Edge Senegal in World Cup Thriller
Norway secure last-32 berth after thrilling 3-2 victory as Erling Haaland continues prolific FIFA World Cup 2026 form
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., June 23: Norway sealed qualification for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a hard fought 3-2 victory over Senegal, powered by another outstanding performance from star striker Erling Haaland.
Playing in front of a sea of Norwegian supporters at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the Scandinavian side overcame a spirited Senegal challenge to book a place in the final 32 during their first World Cup campaign in nearly three decades.
Senegal, considered one of Africa’s strongest contenders in the tournament, started brightly and controlled significant portions of the opening half. Their disciplined pressing and compact defensive shape frustrated Norway’s attacking unit, limiting Haaland’s influence during the early stages.
However, the contest turned shortly before the interval when Norway capitalised on a rare defensive lapse. Substitute Marcus Pedersen, introduced after an injury to Julian Ryerson, broke the deadlock after Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly misjudged a clearance. Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was unable to prevent Pedersen’s effort from finding the back of the net, handing Norway a crucial lead.
The breakthrough shifted momentum firmly in Norway’s favour.
Only minutes after the restart, captain Martin Odegaard produced a moment of quality to set up Haaland for Norway’s second goal. The striker unleashed a powerful finish into the top corner, leaving Mendy with no chance and further strengthening Norway’s grip on the match.
Haaland struck again shortly afterwards to register his second goal of the evening. The Manchester City forward reacted quickest inside the penalty area, volleying home after the ball rebounded off the crossbar. The goal highlighted the clinical finishing that has made him one of the tournament’s standout performers.
With four goals from two World Cup appearances, Haaland has quickly emerged as one of the leading contenders for the Golden Boot award.
Despite trailing by three goals, Senegal refused to surrender. The African side continued to threaten on the counterattack and were rewarded through Ismaila Sarr, who reduced the deficit with a composed finish.
Sarr added another goal deep into stoppage time to set up a tense finale, but Norway managed to hold firm and secure all three points.
The result, combined with France’s 3-0 victory over Iraq earlier in the day, confirmed Norway’s progression to the knockout rounds. Group I became the first group in the tournament to produce two teams guaranteed a place in the final 32.
While Norway and France have secured qualification, the battle for top spot remains undecided and will be settled when the two European nations meet in their final group-stage fixture on Friday.
For Senegal, qualification hopes are now hanging by a thread. The African side must rely on favourable results elsewhere and could still advance as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Following the final whistle, jubilant Norwegian players celebrated with supporters by performing a traditional “Viking row” on the pitch, a gesture that has become synonymous with the team’s fan culture throughout the tournament.
The atmosphere inside the stadium was dominated by Norwegian supporters dressed in red, many of whom have drawn attention across New York in recent days with organised fan events and public celebrations.
Senegal’s travelling support was comparatively limited, with visa-related challenges reportedly affecting the number of fans able to attend matches in the United States.
The encounter was also played under difficult weather conditions. Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept through the region earlier in the day, prompting temporary shelter warnings and causing travel disruptions around the venue.
Although many spectators arrived wearing rain gear and ponchos, conditions improved significantly by kickoff, allowing the match to proceed without major interruptions.
Norway will now turn their attention to a decisive showdown against France, with first place in Group I at stake. Senegal, meanwhile, face a must-win encounter against Iraq as they attempt to keep their World Cup journey alive.
With Haaland in devastating form and Norway growing in confidence, the Nordic nation has emerged as one of the tournament’s most intriguing contenders heading into the knockout phase.
