Prime Minister says Mookerjee's sacrifice and dedication to India's integrity continue to inspire generations
NEW DELHI, June 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid rich tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his death anniversary, remembering him as a visionary leader whose commitment to national unity and public service continues to guide the country.
In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister described the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder as a distinguished patriot, scholar and statesman who devoted his life to the progress and development of India. He said Dr. Mookerjee’s steadfast dedication to the nation’s interests and his courage in public life remain a source of inspiration for countless Indians.
Paying homage on the occasion of his Balidan Diwas, Modi said the former leader’s sacrifice occupies a special place in the country’s collective memory. He noted that Dr. Mookerjee’s ideals continue to influence India’s journey towards greater strength, unity and development.
The Prime Minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a strong and developed nation guided by the principles and values championed by Dr. Mookerjee throughout his life.
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, played a significant role in shaping post-Independence political discourse. He strongly advocated for the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country and was a vocal critic of the special constitutional provisions that existed for the erstwhile state.
Mookerjee passed away on June 23, 1953, while under detention in Srinagar. Over the decades, his contributions to national politics and his vision for a united India have been widely remembered by supporters and political leaders across the country.
The Bharatiya Jana Sangh later evolved into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is currently led by Prime Minister Modi. Party leaders and workers across the nation observed the day by paying floral tributes and recalling Dr. Mookerjee’s role in strengthening the spirit of national integration.
His legacy gained renewed attention after the Centre revoked Article 370 on August 5, 2019, ending the special status previously accorded to Jammu and Kashmir. Supporters of Dr. Mookerjee have often cited the move as being in line with the vision he advocated during his political career.
As the nation remembered one of its prominent political figures, tributes poured in from various quarters, highlighting Dr. Mookerjee’s enduring influence on India’s democratic and national landscape.
