TN CM Hits Back at Opposition Over ‘Inexperienced’ Remark

Chief Minister says his public service predates entry into politics; Assembly session witnesses DMK walkout after heated exchange

Chennai, Jun 24: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday strongly defended his political experience and launched a sharp attack on the Opposition DMK over alleged corruption, triggering a stormy scene in the Assembly that ended with a DMK walkout.

Replying to the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s Address, Vijay rejected criticism that his government and the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) lacked administrative experience, asserting that his engagement with public issues stretched back several decades.

The Chief Minister said his journey in public life began through fan club activities in the 1990s and continued through various social and political causes, including support for Sri Lankan Tamils, fishermen’s rights, the Jallikattu movement and opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He maintained that his political rise was rooted in sustained public outreach rather than a sudden transition from cinema to politics.

Recalling challenges faced during his political journey, Vijay said he had overcome several obstacles and restrictions while attempting to connect with people across the State. He added that his entry into politics was marked by persistent public engagement and difficult experiences rather than an easy shift from the film industry.

The Assembly witnessed uproar after Vijay accused the previous DMK regime of corruption. Opposition members led by DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin demanded evidence for the allegations and sought permission from the Speaker to respond. After the request was denied, DMK legislators staged a walkout from the House.

Responding to remarks questioning the government’s administrative capability, Vijay said his administration may lack expertise in corruption but not in governance. He asserted that his government was committed to protecting public resources, ensuring transparency in public projects and directing State funds towards welfare measures.

The Chief Minister also promised strict action against corruption, saying no individual or political organisation would be spared if found involved in wrongdoing.

Taking a swipe at critics who continue to identify him primarily as an actor, Vijay said the 2026 Assembly election had demonstrated the people’s confidence in him and the TVK. He emphasised that his government would be defined by performance and public service, and thanked the people of Tamil Nadu for entrusting his party with power.
