Kharge Urges PM Modi to Sack Amit Shah, Says ‘If Any Shame Remains’
Congress president alleges the government broke its assurance to demonstrators by filing FIRs and carrying out detentions after protests were withdrawn.
New Delhi, Jul 31: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday launched a fresh attack on the Centre, accusing it of pursuing a “politics of vendetta” against students by registering FIRs and carrying out detentions after they ended their protests. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging a failure to uphold accountability.
In a post on X, Kharge claimed that students and youth had agreed to withdraw their agitation only after receiving assurances that no punitive action would be taken against them. However, he alleged that governments led by the BJP had gone back on that commitment by initiating legal proceedings against several protesters.
Referring to the police action during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march and demonstrations over the alleged NEET paper leak, the Congress chief said security forces used excessive force, including lathis, batons and pellet guns, against those participating in the protests.
Kharge further alleged that despite the protests ending, authorities continued to take action against students through FIRs and detentions. He also claimed that some young people’s social media accounts had been blocked and that women protesters had been subjected to online harassment and exposure of personal information.
The senior Congress leader criticised Amit Shah for not addressing Parliament on the issue, alleging that the Home Minister had avoided making a statement on responsibility and accountability.
Kharge asserted that the government’s attempts to protect its image would no longer succeed, claiming that young people had seen through its actions. He concluded by saying that if the government wished to demonstrate accountability, Prime Minister Modi should ask Amit Shah to resign.
The remarks come amid continued political sparring between the ruling BJP and the Opposition over the handling of student protests and the broader controversy surrounding alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.
