Doctors Protest Maharashtra Move Allowing Homeopathy Practitioners to Practice Modern Medicine

Maharashtra, Aug 04 : A decision by the Maharashtra government to allow certain homeopathy practitioners to practice modern medicine has triggered strong opposition from doctors and medical organisations across the state. Several medical professionals have raised concerns over the impact of the move on healthcare quality, patient safety, and professional standards.
The controversy began after a government resolution issued on August 3 permitted homeopathic practitioners who have completed a one year certificate course to provide allopathic medical services. Doctors’ groups criticised the decision, arguing that modern medicine requires extensive clinical training and specialised qualifications.
In response, doctors announced a one-day boycott of medical services to protest the policy change. Medical bodies stated that allowing practitioners without adequate allopathic training to prescribe modern medicines could create risks for patients and affect the credibility of the healthcare system.
The issue has renewed debate over the integration of different systems of medicine in India and the need for maintaining clear regulatory boundaries between healthcare streams. Experts have emphasised that expanding medical access should not compromise treatment standards or patient welfare.
