Health Ministry Strengthens Screening Drive to Detect Non-Communicable Diseases Early

Expanded community based programme focuses on identifying diabetes, hypertension and common cancers before complications develop.

New Delhi, Aug 03 : The Health Ministry has expanded its nationwide screening initiative for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), aiming to improve early detection and reduce the long-term impact of chronic illnesses. The programme places special emphasis on identifying diabetes, hypertension and select cancers through community level health assessments.

Under the campaign, frontline healthcare workers are conducting routine screenings at health and wellness centres while encouraging adults to undergo regular check-ups. Individuals identified as being at risk are referred to higher medical facilities for confirmation, treatment and follow up care.

Officials said early diagnosis plays a crucial role in preventing severe complications such as heart disease, kidney failure and stroke. The programme also promotes lifestyle modifications, including balanced nutrition, regular physical activity and tobacco cessation, to lower disease risk.

Health experts noted that many non-communicable diseases remain undiagnosed until advanced stages because symptoms often develop gradually. Expanding preventive screening at the grassroots level is expected to improve treatment outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

The ministry said awareness campaigns will continue alongside the screening programme to encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles and seek timely medical advice. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare and reduce the country’s growing burden of chronic diseases.
