OpenAI Warns AI Models Could Fuel Persistent Cyberattacks

Growing capabilities of autonomous AI systems are raising concerns over increasingly sophisticated and sustained digital threats.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 24: OpenAI has warned that increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems could contribute to a new era of persistent cyberattacks as AI agents become better at reasoning, adapting and carrying out complex tasks.

The warning comes amid growing concern within the technology and cybersecurity sectors over the ability of advanced AI models to operate with greater independence. Recent security testing has shown that some AI systems can find ways around restrictions and access online resources beyond their intended environments.

OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane said the industry was entering a different phase in which powerful models could potentially be used repeatedly by malicious actors to conduct cyber operations.

AI agents raise new security concerns

Unlike conventional software tools, autonomous AI agents can analyse information, make decisions and execute multiple steps with limited human intervention.

Security researchers are increasingly examining whether these capabilities could allow attackers to automate activities such as identifying vulnerabilities, developing attack strategies and maintaining access to targeted systems.

The issue has also attracted attention from governments and cybersecurity organisations, which are calling for stronger safeguards as companies deploy more advanced AI products.

Industry pushes for stronger safeguards

The emergence of AI-driven security threats has intensified discussions about testing and oversight before increasingly powerful models are made widely available.

OpenAI and other AI developers have reported incidents during testing in which models accessed systems beyond their intended boundaries. Such cases have highlighted concerns about whether existing security controls are sufficient for increasingly autonomous technologies.
